Hi everyone,

Im trying to make alpha Al2 03 via a sol-gel route.

Right now im mixing the chemicals trying to get my gels but its not going well. Im using "New sol gel route for the preparation of pure alpha-alumina at 950C" by Naoufal Bahlawane, Journal of American Ceramics, 83 [9] 2324-26 (2000) as a basis.

I have mixed the organic solvent (diethylene glycol monoethyl ether), the raw aterial (aluminium isopropoxide) and acetic acid as described in the paper.

He describes how he was a clear sol at the end of the process yet mine is still cloudy. Does anyone have any help for me? This is my first ever sol gel experiment.

I used another recipe, the name of the article is " optical high temperature sensor based on green up-conversion emission in Er3+ doped Al2O3" by B. Dong. I had the same problem as you and I heated up the solution. In this way I got the transparent solution.
Good luck
