I am now preparing the sol containing organic and inorganic materials for optic application. The sol prepared in this way has high viscosity. Before using spin coating to lay a film, a step was ever performed: that is to move the larger size particles in the sol by using filter membrane with 0.22 or 0.45 micrometer in diameter. These particles in large sizes may be produced by the reaction itself or the foreign dust etc, and are required to be got rid of . However, it is diffucult for me to let the high viscosity solution pass through the filter membrane, saying nothing of filtering the larger particles. It would be appreciated that a good suggestion in filtering method for sol with high viscosity is obtained here.

I also filter highly viscous solutions (made with glycerol!) with a 0.2 micron filter membrane.  There are many different filters available commercially, with different behaviours.  As long as you pick an appropriate filter for your solvent system it should be very easy.  Talk to your supplier to make sure you have the right type of filter membrane.

maybe you could filter the dispersion under pressure.
